Thinking about signing up for a Wim Hof Method workshop? Here are 5 reasons why you should take the plunge and come along to a workshop (Yes, I’m biased, but for good reason).
TL;DR
There's nothing like the energy & feeling from a group breathing session
They’re learning experiences
Instructors can help you with your technique
You’ll learn techniques to suit specific health needs you may have
Instructors are there to challenge you and help you get out of your comfort zone, safely
Just like with the sport you play, instructional videos and online forums are no replacement for one-to-one coaching from a qualified individual.
Regardless if you’ve just downloaded the free mobile app, reached the end of the online video course, are somewhere in between or thinking of starting, there are benefits to coming along to a workshop with a Certified Wim Hof Method Instructor.
Here are my top 5 reasons why you should come along to a Wim Hof Method workshop.
1. There's nothing like the energy & feeling from a group breathing session
A breathing session by yourself compared to one with 12, 20, 50 or more people, led by an Instructor, is a vastly different experiences. People who’ve been practicing at home and come along to a workshop always comment on how much deeper they were able to go and the energy they felt.
At a workshop there’s no need to count your breaths, worry if you’re making too much noise or hold back. An Instructor-led breathing session allows you to fully let go and dial in to your body and mind.
2. They’re learning experiences
Our bodies are fascinating and the way the Wim Hof Method influences them especially so. As instructors we’re passionate about continually learning about these aspects of the Wim Hof Method, but we’re more passionate about sharing it with others!
Plus, Instructors often like to incorporate other disciplines into workshops. For example, I like to incorporate techniques to benefit sports performance and breathing optimisation, while other instructors may incorporate sound healing or yoga flows.
It’s a guarantee that you’ll come away having learnt something new!
3. Instructors can help you with your technique
While the breathing technique is straight forward, when starting out it’s important to learn, understand and apply the basics correctly (and safely). For those new to the Wim Hof Method, attending a workshop can provide you with guidance to help you get the maximum benefit when practicing at home later on.
For those who’ve been practicing for longer, you can benefit from tips to help you go deeper, or additional techniques for you to experiment with to expand your practice.
4. You’ll learn techniques to suit specific health needs you may have
The Wim Hof Method is suitable for almost everyone, however the techniques may need to be adjusted for some, including, for example those with CFS/fibromyalgia, PTSD, cancer patients, the elderly or those who may have a fear of the cold.
With the guidance of a Certified Instructor, you’ll learn scaled techniques & tips to help you benefit from the method.
Returning your health declaration before the event gives your Instructor the necessary information to plan their workshop. If you have health concerns, I recommend discussing these prior to your workshop.
5. Instructors are there to challenge you and help you get out of your comfort zone, safely
Breathwork and cold exposure are powerful forces, and for some the thought of doing them can be daunting or frightening. The safe, inclusive space created by the instructor during a workshop provides a great opportunity for you to explore your boundaries, challenge your limiting beliefs and see what lies on the other side of fear!
As Wim likes to say - “We can do so much more than we think we can.” A Wim Hof Method workshop is a perfect way to truly experience this for yourself.
Lastly, it’s important to remember that not every coaching style will work for you. Each Instructor has their own unique way of teaching and their own area of interest (mine, for example, are sports performance & mental health).
I’d encourage you to reach out to them and ask them questions, feel them out and see if they're a good fit. If so, book a workshop with them (and don’t forget to ask questions when you’re there!).
I look forward to seeing you at a workshop in the future.
